Juniper tree planting fall shoreline restoration project in Pine River Watershed

Network helps to restore, protect Pine River shoreline by helping shoreline residents to plant Juniper trees

Over the past several years, Pine River Watershed Initiative Network (PRWIN)  has proudly offered the Fall Shoreline Restoration Project multiple times, providing more than 400 Juniper trees to lakeshore property owners to help restore and protect the shoreline of the Pine River Watershed.

You may register for up to three Junipers to plant on your shoreline.

Drop-off is in October and the exact date will be communicated to those registered.

The deadline to register is Friday, August 14, 2026.

PRWIN continues to work with shoreline residents and cottagers and residents along the southeast shoreline of Lake Huron, in the Township of Huron-Kinloss, to restore beach dunes impacted by the high lake levels experienced in recent years.

One of the best low-profile plants for this restoration is the Blue Chip Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis 'Blue Chip').

These hardy, spreading evergreens help trap blowing sand during autumn and winter, gradually rebuilding dunes over time.

Their extensive root systems also stabilize the sand, helping to reduce erosion during the strong spring winds.

For the restoration effort to be most effective, Junipers should be planted on the swale or back dune area of the shoreline.

As the plants mature, they naturally capture and hold sand, allowing the dunes to rebuild and better withstand future fluctuations in Lake Huron water levels.

By working together, we can help protect our shoreline.
